Ethan Kaplan's Blog #4-Dumb And Dumber Scene Analysis

The Loyd and Seabass Bathroom Stall Scene In this scene of "Dumb and Dumber", the two charachters pull up to a gas station late at night to get some gas. Loyd goes to use the bathroom. We see loyd in a medium shot peeing and then he begins to read some writings on the stall walls. As he looks at each reading, we then see close up iso shots of the writings which are followed by medium reaction shots of Loyd's facial expressions. Finally, Loyd reads a message saying "For love, be here at exactly 2:15 AM". Loyd looks at his watch and we see a close up shot of the watch pointing to 2:15 Am with a hightened sense of non-digetic scoring from an implementation of metal rock music. Afterwards, the music shifts to an even more threatening tone and we see Loyd from an above angle, exemplifying his impunity and vulnerability. Then a man by the name of Seabass enters the stall with an angry tone. Seabass is shown from a low angle to exemplify power. The camera shifts back and forth from showing Seabass at a low angle to showing Loyd at a high angle to give us a clear image of which charachter is more powerful in this situation. Finally towards the end of the scene as Seabass is about to Rape Loyd, Harry comes barging trying to put out a fire on his foot and slams the stall door into Seabass, knocking him out and saving Loyd. The music shifts from a hard rock to silence, to exemplify the level of confusion. Link to Scene: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hm3iwINTF90
